This is an Amish romance. Naomi was orphaned as a teen when her parents died in a buggy accident. Since then, she has lived with two elderly Amish widows who are sisters. They own an inn as well as rent out two other small homes in their property. Naomi, now in her twenties, is nursing a broken heart after fiancé left her claiming he wasn't ready for marriage. Her elderly adoptive grandmother's have been trying to fix her up with someone before she becomes a spinster, but she still loves Thomas and refuses to date again hoping he'll return to her.
Amos is also nursing a broken heart after his fianceé died of cancer. He doesn't think he can ever recover from her loss. He travels to the inn with his mother for a cousin's wedding. He is struck by Naomi's beauty when he firsts meets her but stubbornly dismissed any feelings choosing to stay in his grief. Naomi does the same.
Together they find a friendship that stems from a mutual love of painting. When Amos's mother returns home, he agrees to stay and help repair things at the inn for the elderly widows. It's in this time he lets his walls crumble and Naomi into his heart. The problem is whether she's willing to do the same when Thomas returns.
Cute story. All of these characters had unique personalities especially the elderly sisters who bantered back and forth and the old grumpy man living on the property who gave them headaches. If it weren't for the shenanigans of the sisters, this story would not have been as good. They were painted as real people with senses of humor which I often find lacking in Amish stories. I also like that Amos and Naomi were willing to paint and be creative even though that was generally looked down on in the community. Definitely worth the read!
