A Prayer for Owen Meany

This story is a Christian fiction book that was listed as part of The Great American Read and a national bestseller.
Owen Meany is a friend of the narrator of this book. He's a small underdeveloped child. He's also the one who accidentally kills the narrator's mother. They remain friends as John learns lessons from Owen.
I'll be honest, I only chose to read this book because of its standing. I was looking for something out of the romance category. But, I struggled. I wasn't sure I'd get out of the ridiculously long first chapter! I forced myself to continue. It just seemed to babble on and switch from topic to topic trying to bring it back to Owen Meany.
After I finally entered chapter 3 and the ramblings just kept going from one story to the next, and I saw that I still had over 800 pages to go I skipped over it all just to see what happens to Owen in the end. And honestly, I don't feel as though I missed anything.
I understand this may be the type of book some people get into, I just couldn't. I'm talking, read a page and put it down because I JUST CAN'T do it. It all felt like meanial backstory. I know the author is well liked and makes big bucks. That's great for him, and we all have our style. This just isn't mine.
So on that note, read it if you like. I'm not recommending it though.
