Forsaken by Michael McBride

Forsaken
Unit 51 Series book 2

By Michael McBride

❤️❤️❤️❤️💔
🔥

There's so much going on in this second book of the Unit 51 series! The last book ended with barely an escape from the treacherous Antarctic AREA 51 research base. Only a few make it out. Six months later 2 survivors are re-recruited to return to the new amped up military complex version of the base now call FOB (field operation base) Antarctica. They were plucked up from their study of a new crop circle. At the base, they help search for the humanoid alien survivors they ran from after one is captured.

Meanwhile, two other survivors are uncovering a new discovery at Chitzen Itza in Mexico and a third runs into an alien drone in Africa. Let's just say the creatures are organizing for something yet unseen.

Now let's add in a devious organization trying to steal from Unit 51. There is so much going on! It's just as action packed as the first. The mysteries keep stacking up. And I'm like, no!

I wanted to give this 5 stars, but there's almost too many plots and people to keep up with. That's my only issue. Definitely start this series especially if your into alien take overs, science fiction, thrillers, and government conspiracies.

Our Broken Pieces by Sarah White

Our Broken Pieces

By Sarah White

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Everly had caught her best friend making out with her boyfriend of two years. She was devastated and ended up in therapy to work out the drama, fear, and hurt they both caused her. There she met Gabe who was dealing with his sister's attempted suicide. They help each other overcome their fears.

I want to say this book deals with suicide attempts, bipolar disorder, breakups, and sex. There was description of clothes coming off and feelings that go with it but not of the act. So I'd recommend this book for 15+ year olds for that reason. Both characters are still in high school, however they are also 18.

All in all, this story ran the gambit of emotions and is a happily ever after story once you pull through the mess of these two lives. And I'm glad I never let anyone in high school pull me down to where I questioned who I was. Keep your heads up! Love yourself more! And always move forward.

The First Kiss Hypothesis by Christina Madelski

The First Kiss Hypothesis

By Christina Mandelski

❤️❤️❤️❤️💔
🔥

I chose this book, a rom com for something light and fun to read while reading another book. It went quick, just a few hours. It's labeled as young adult, bit I'll warn there was lots of language and sexual inuendos. So if your a younger teen be aware.

Eli is a lacrosse loving jock who's best friend is the girl next door, literally. He was fine with the friend zone until he realized he really had feelings for her. Nora is a scientific genius who has a theory on love at first kiss because that's what happened to her grandparents, and it didn't work for her parents. Nora and Eli kissed years ago and to her it was a messy flop and he was out of the running for her happily ever after. Since then she's kissed nearly every boy she can looking for that spark. Underneath it all is a long time crush on her best friend that she thinks is cramping her style. She sets out to let go of him, but Eli proposes a new theory, chaos. He sets out to prove her wrong hoping to win her over. What could go wrong?

This book is all about the power of friendship, looking at all possibilities, and hope for that one person to love forever.

It's definitely a cute read.

The Defiance by Laura Gallier

The Defiance
The Delusion Series

By Laura Gallier

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔥
✝️

This is final book in the Delusion Series and wow! What a great ending. This is a seriously anointed series. Laura has really done her homework when it comes to spiritual authority, demon works and possession, and the symbolism to show that in the spiritual world away from human eyes. I love it!

This final book has Owen battling mostly on his own and both he and Ray Anne need to learn how to let go of their pasta in order to come into full authority. Only then can evil be defeated.

I can't say enough good things about this series. I will warn there are a lot of hot button issues like teen pregnancy, murder, suicide, lust, conspiracy, death, abduction, ect. But I don't want those issues to be reason not to read this incredible series. If anything they may help overcome them. Plus it's a happily ever after! But maybe keep it to 14+years.

Bewitched Shifter by Tamsin Ley

Bewitched Shifter
Aurora Shifters

By Tamsin Ley

❤️❤️❤️
🔥
❌❌

This story takes place in Alaska and involves wolf shifters and witches if your into those paranormal stories. Kepler is a shifter police officer working a homicide when he discovers the victim, a woman, is also the one who killed the rogue shifter of his case.
One sniff and he knew right away that she was his mate. The problem was she became a shifter when the rogue bit her and a spell also infused a demon in with her. They have to fight the demon when it casts her and her wolf out of her body.

I want to say it's a good book, but it's kind of just meh for me. There are some sex scenes that are pretty typical, and I hoped the story would be a little more intense. Tamsin could've really had an awesome scene with the demon and hellmouth with more descriptions. But it fell flat for me.

The Deception by Laura Gallier

The Deception
The Delusion Series

By Laura Gallier

❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔥
✝️

This is the second book in this series. You can also find my review of the first book here: http://andreaperezbookreviews.blogspot.com/2021/01/the-delusion-by-laura-gallier.html

The story continues as Owen and his girlfriend Ray Ann fight the forces of evil hidden from our everyday sight. In this book they go head to head with witchcraft, familiar spirits, and the principality known as Molek. Molek is the deity that was worshipped in the middle east for millenia and is who children were sacrificed to. He is a demon of death, and Laura uses him creatively in this series pitting him against a small town in Texas.

There's a lot going on in this book that Owen learns and works through as he grows in his faith. That includes learning discernment and his power in Jesus. These books, so far, are well thought out and great reads for teens probably older than 14 as there are issues presented like pregnancy, suicide, child sacrifice, and a hint at abortion.

I look forward to starting the next and last book in this series as this book ended in a cliffhanger.

The Delusion by Laura Gallier

The Delusion
The Delusion Series

By Laura Gallier

❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔥
✝️

I wasn't sure what I'd find in this book. I've never read a Laura Gallier book before, and I'm pleased that I did. This book is a Christian Fantasy about a teen boy who is goaded into drinking from an old well when he wants answers. He gets deathly ill and comes out of it able to see into the spirit realm. Oh how cool that would be! I'm not sure many people would actually want that gift, but I do! Anywho, he sees how demons attach themselves to their hosts and manipulate them. He also begins to see a principality named Molek, the demon of death who has put a death sentence upon his school.

This story is about questioning everything, accepting truth, and allowing oneself to open their eyes that there is more out there than meets the eye. I highly encourage you to check this one out!

The Devil Takes A Bride by Julia London

The Devil Takes a Bride

By Julia London

❤️❤️❤️💔
🔥
❌❌

Some spoilers!
1850's. Grace is flirty, fun, and enjoys society. She's also beautiful and can have any man to wed if she tried, but she's having too much fun. She amicably flirts with a Viscount named Amherst routinely. Neither mean anything by it. However, when Grace realizes her mother's condition, madness which sounds a lot like dimensia, worsens, Grace feels pressured to marry so her sisters can too. Apparently once it gets out that mother is crazy it will be hard to find suitors. Families don't want that passing on. She sets up a trap for Amherst but ends up with his brother, the Earl instead. He's a troubled man with OCD and perverse fantasies due to trama.

First, I want to say Grace's character is aptly named because she is a fixer. She wants to help people and animals. The Earl is the perfect project in that respect. However, their first time in their "marital conjugal visits" were basically rape. 😡 At one point she said no and he continued. It was uncomfortable 😣. She's VERY forgiving and probably naive and determines herself to figure him out and abide by his fantasies.

Second, the storylines goes quick. I'm talking in a few weeks and BAM she's okay with his attitude, his perversions, his past, his OCD, as if everyone is fine. And just as quickly...happy ending.  I gave it the extra half heart soley for her strength and the happy ending. I can't say I'll read another Julia London book or not after this...time will tell. As far as recommending it, you make the call after this review.

These Nameless Things by Shawn Smucker

These Nameless Things

By Shawn Smucker

❤️❤️❤️

This is advertised as a Christian book but also mystic which don't really work together. Honestly, I didn't see much Christian related other than references to 2-3 verses. And the main character was only trying to remember it. The rest was reflective of Dante's Inferno and Greek mythology.

The premise of the story is Dan is living in a village at the base of an evil mountain. But the villagers have no memory of their time before the mountain. They know they came out of the mountain and we're tortured within it, but all the rest is forgotten until a girl and mysterious woman show up. Memory and anger are stirred up as each villager realizes what happened. Dan who's been waiting on his brother to come out of the mountain has to come to terms with his brothers truth as well as his own.

The story sounded intriguing. But it was confusing at first and utterly slow. I can read quickly, but this one took me nearly three weeks to finish. I was like the little engine that could. I think I can. I think I can. It was boring😴. The writing was great and the idea was awesome. It just couldn't hold me for longer than ten minutes at a time.

A Touch of Heaven by Samantha Chase

A Touch of Heaven

By Samantha Chase

❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔥

This was a classic story. Regan's mom wins a home makeover at the best timing, since she wants to sell her home. Regan hates it because it's her childhood home. The idea of changing it and selling it is hard on her. Then she meets Sawyer, the carpenter/host of the show. Oh, and her mom meets Max, Sawyer's dad, who is also on the show. Both women fall hard for them and Sawyer seems like a genuine good guy until a vindictive producer tells Regan something. Can they salvage what they had?

This book is a little bit saucy, a lot of passion, and lots of learning how to let go. I actually really like Sawyer's character in this book. He jumped right in. I like a strong male character willing to go for what he wants.

I like Samantha's novels. I've read a few, and this one, like the others doesn't disappoint!

10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston

10 Blind Dates

By Ashley Elston

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I chose this book to read because it looked like light-hearted fun. Sophia has a large Italian family who like to meddle. When she and her boyfriend breakup they decide to set her up on ten blind dates. The dates are interesting but the best, well funniest, is Hundred Hands Harold in date number two. I was laughing so hard which rarely happens when I read. It was great! This poor girl😂.

All the dates are different and unique as are the boys. I honestly think I would've enjoyed this in high school. It would've made dating so much more fun.

Sophia is also a part of a close group that includes her two cousins and the neighbor boy. They tag along on some of the dates to document it but Sophia has hidden feelings for Wes even though he has a girlfriend.

I definitely recommend this one for anyone older than 14 (One date has iffy content-nit specifically mentioned. More like beat around the bush.) It had me laughing more than once.

Sweet on Him by Maria Michaels

Sweet on Him
A clean and wholesome reunion Romance Novella
The Sweet Life Series

By Maria Michaels

❤️❤️❤️❤️

This novella is the clean version of Heatherly Bell's Starlight Hill series. I love when authors do this! I prefer the clean books with my Christian background. This is a great way to read a nice story without the extras.

Anyway, this story begins with Joe crashing his airplane. Kailey, his ex girlfriend finds out. She had run from him scared of the commitment, but she returned knowing that she almost lost the love of her life. She's determined to win him back.

It's a nice fast story about finding oneself and conquering your fears and figuring out you are your biggest opponent in life. I'll recommend it especially if you need to kill time and want something quick.

The Rules of Persuasion by Amity Hope

The Rules of Persuasion

By Amity Hope

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔥

This young adult book is actually very cute. Luke catches Meg vandalizing their school and holds it over her by blackmailing her into dating him. He has his own things that this dating scheme is supposed to help him with. He doesn't realize though how easily the lines can get muddled in the realm of fake dating. Meg on the other hand definitely needed a cute distraction even if he was holding her future in his hands.

There's lots of suspense especially when the truth begins to unfurl on both sides and feelings get hurt.

People, let's learn that lies always catch up to you, okay?😆

Anyway, it was a good book. I'd recommend it to any teen to read. It's a quick read too.

Come back soon!

Subhuman by Michael McBride

Subhuman
Unit 51 series book 1

By Michael McBride

❤️❤️❤️❤️💔
🔥🔥

Do you like ancient history? Aliens? The unknown? Sci-fi? This book has it! Wow, lots going on here!

First, I want to say there are LOTS of points of view. Each chapter changes between characters and can be a bit difficult at first to keep up. However, once they come together the story starts to really flow.

Richards is a scientist and is devoted to finding aliens. He also has aquired the location of a former German Antarctic base which he renames AREA 51(an acronym). He recruits some savvy researchers, archeogists, paleobotanists, forensic specialists, ect.

Of course all goes wrong when they turn on a pyramid hidden deep inside the Antarctic mountains.

I'll tell you my grandfather worked with NASA in the 60's-70's, and he always speculated things like this. He'd have loved this book. He truly was a believer in all things alien, lol. I have differing opinions, but this story was very suspenseful. I'll begin the next in this series soon! This is a definite read!

Her Rancher Bodyguard by Brenda Minton

Her Rancher Bodyguard

By Brenda Minton

❤️❤️❤️❤️
✝️

Kayla is the daughter of a politician. Her father's family is more concerned about his career than what happened to her years ago by a family friend. I'm sure you can guess what happened because I had to guess. It was never stated.

After threats on her life and his candidacy, he hired a bodyguard to protect Kayla. You can imagine how close these two get when they must spend 24/7 together.

I like this story because it walks a slow walk for Kayla's recovery from drugs and alcohol to putting her trust in Boone the bodyguard. A lot of Christian books tend to jump right in and this didn't. You'll see the thoughts from both characters and even Boone has his own things to recover from.

It's a sweet easy read for those who like wholesome books.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

A Prayer for Owen Meany

By John Irving

❤️
✝️

This story is a Christian fiction book that was listed as part of The Great American Read and a national bestseller.

Owen Meany is a friend of the narrator of this book. He's a small underdeveloped child. He's also the one who accidentally kills the narrator's mother. They remain friends as John learns lessons from Owen.

I'll be honest, I only chose to read this book because of its standing. I was looking for something out of the romance category. But, I struggled. I wasn't sure I'd get out of the ridiculously long first chapter! I forced myself to continue. It just seemed to babble on and switch from topic to topic trying to bring it back to Owen Meany.

After I finally entered chapter 3 and the ramblings just kept going from one story to the next, and I saw that I still had over 800 pages to go I skipped over it all just to see what happens to Owen in the end. And honestly, I don't feel as though I missed anything.

I understand this may be the type of book some people get into, I just couldn't. I'm talking, read a page and put it down because I JUST CAN'T do it. It all felt like meanial backstory. I know the author is well liked and makes big bucks. That's great for him, and we all have our style. This just isn't mine.

So on that note, read it if you like. I'm not recommending it though.

Perfect Mate by Mina Carter

Perfect Mate
Project Rebellion, book 1

By Mina Carter

❤️❤️❤️💔
🔥
❌❌

Happy New Year! 2021 has the potential to be better or far worse than 2020 politically, economically, and spiritually, but as far as books go 2020 gave us some goods to write with! 😆 I have set a goal of 150 books for the year, but I read close to 300 in 2020. Easy peasy. Let's get started for the year!

First off, I must have a fascination with werewolves... Secondly, maybe shifters in general. It's not something I'd condone in reality, but it's fiction so🤷‍♀️...

Anyway, the characters in this series, werewolves (Lycans), vampires (Bloods), and zombies (re-animates or RAs for short) were normal men and women either civilians or former military who found themselves dying and given an injection by a top secret government program called the Project. The injection contained one of the three viruses that turned them into the creatures they are now.

Jack, a Lycan alpha, enters the story injured on a guerney at a mental hospital and encounters Lillian. He senses her as his mate and she is immediately captivated by him. Curiosity gets the better of her. She sneaks into the forbidden wing of the hospital and frees him with his packmates.

The Project doesn't like messes especially when kill orders go wrong and the pack should've been gone. There's lots of fighting, a hint at another couple of love interests between characters, and the finalization between Jack and Lillian. It's hot and detailed so it got 2 X's.

I wanted to give this 4 hearts but there needed to be an edit. There were sentences with missing words that didn't make sense without filling in the blank. But the storyline itself has me continuing onto the next book to see what happens to one of the packmates.
